Jesus’ sacrifice made reconciliation with God possible. The crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ stand at the very heart of the Christian faith. This pivotal event in human history set into motion God’s plan of salvation and opened the way for sinful humanity to be reconciled with a holy God.
The Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ
The spiritual significance of Christ’s sacrifice
The Gospels record that Jesus was condemned to death by crucifixion on false charges at the hands of the Jewish religious leaders and with the approval of the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate. Although innocent of any crime, Jesus willingly gave himself up to die on the cross as part of God’s divine plan from the foundation of the world. As Jesus hung on the cross at Calvary just outside Jerusalem, he took upon himself the sins and judgment that rightfully belonged to humanity. Though he was God in the flesh, Jesus bore our sins in his body as the perfect and ultimate sacrifice. After crying out “It is finished!” Jesus gave up his spirit and died.
The anguish of Christ’s sacrifice
The immense spiritual significance of Christ’s sacrifice was matched only by the horror of crucifixion itself. Reserved for the worst criminals, crucifixion was designed to inflict maximum pain, humiliation, and suffering before eventual death. But for Jesus, the pain of the cross paled in comparison to the deeper anguish of being separated from God the Father as he bore the sins of the world. This anguish led Jesus to cry out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” as he hung on the cross, quoting Psalm 22.
Jesus’ burial
After Jesus’ death, his lifeless body was removed from the cross and buried in a tomb offered by Joseph of Arimathea, one of Jesus’ disciples. The tomb was sealed and guarded by Roman soldiers at the request of the Jewish authorities who feared Jesus’ prophecy that he would rise again after three days.
Jesus’ resurrection from the dead
On the third day, Mary Magdalene and other women disciples arrived at the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices. To their shock and amazement, they found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. An angel declared to them the incredible news that Jesus had risen from the dead as he said! Over the next forty days, the risen Christ appeared multiple times to his disciples and others, dispelling doubts and showing himself to be truly alive again.
Jesus’ resurrection from the dead verified his identity as the Son of God. It also provided proof that his sacrifice was accepted by God the Father as payment for sin. It confirmed the truth of his teachings and demonstrated his power over sin and death.
Believing the Gospel for Salvation
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is more than just an important historical event. This event is at the very center of the gospel message. It’s the good news that allows us to be saved from sin and have eternal life.
Salvation comes only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ
The Bible makes it abundantly clear that salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we cannot earn or deserve salvation through good works or religious rituals. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
This saving faith is more than just intellectual agreement. It’s a personal trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross to atone for our sins. When we place our faith in Jesus, repenting of our sins, we can experience forgiveness of sins. Once forgiven, we become reconciled to God, and receive the gift of eternal life.
The essential message of reconciliation with God
The apostle Paul summed up the simple but profound truth of the gospel message. He wrote: “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). By doing so, Jesus paid the price for our salvation through his substitutionary death on the cross. And He proved his power over death through his resurrection. When we believe this and call on Jesus as Lord, we can be saved (Romans 10:9-10).
