The Gospel of God: A Self-Study Guide for Salvation and Eternal Life
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” — Romans 1:16
This guide invites you on a personal journey to discover the truth of the Gospel — God’s good news for you — and to respond in faith and repentance.
1. Who is God, and why does He matter to me?
Question:
Do I truly understand who God is — His holiness, His love, and His authority over my life?
Scripture:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” — Isaiah 6:3
Explanation:
God is the eternal Creator and ruler of all things. He is perfectly holy, righteous, and full of love. Because He created you, your life belongs to Him. His holiness demands purity, and His justice cannot overlook sin — yet His love provides a way for sinners to be forgiven and restored to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.
2. What separates me from a holy God?
Question:
What keeps me from having a right relationship with my Creator?
Scripture:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
“The wages of sin is death…” — Romans 6:23a
Explanation:
Sin is disobedience against God — in thought, word, or deed. It’s not just the bad things we do; it’s the inner rebellion of our heart against God’s authority. Sin separates us from His holiness and leads to spiritual death. Left on our own, we face eternal separation from God.
3. Can I make myself right with God?
Question:
If I try harder, do good works, or live morally, will that remove my sin or earn God’s favor?
Scripture:
“By works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight.” — Romans 3:20
“All our righteous acts are like filthy rags.” — Isaiah 64:6
Explanation:
No one can earn salvation by good deeds or religious effort. God’s standard is perfection, and we all fall short. The problem is not just our actions but our nature — we are sinners by birth and by choice. True salvation requires God’s grace, not human effort.
4. What did God do to rescue sinners?
Question:
If I cannot save myself, how did God make a way for me to be forgiven?
Scripture:
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
Explanation:
Because He loves us, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ — fully God and fully man — to live a sinless life and die on the cross in our place. Jesus bore our sin and punishment, satisfying God’s justice. He rose from the dead, conquering sin and death, so that whoever believes in Him will be forgiven and live forever.
5. What must I do to be saved?
Question:
How should I respond to this message of God’s love and grace?
Scripture:
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out.” — Acts 3:19
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” — Acts 16:31
“If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Romans 10:9
Explanation:
Salvation is a gift, not a reward. To receive it, you must repent (turn away from sin and toward God) and believe in Jesus — trusting His death and resurrection alone for your forgiveness. True faith surrenders your life to Jesus as Savior and Lord. This is the moment where death turns to life, and guilt turns to grace.
6. What does it mean to follow Jesus?
Question:
If I receive Christ, how does my life change?
Scripture:
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” — Luke 9:23
Explanation:
When you are spiritually reborn and place your trust in Jesus, God forgives your sins and fills you with His Holy Spirit. You become a new person with new desires — to love God, obey His Word, and live for His purpose. Following Christ means daily surrender, growing in love, and living for His glory.
A Plea for Decision
God is offering you the greatest gift ever — forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life through Jesus Christ. Will you receive Him today?
The Bible says, “Now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Don’t wait. Your life and eternity depend on this choice.
Prayer of Salvation
If your heart is ready to turn to God, you can pray something like this:
“God, I know that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus Christ, your Son, died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and place my trust in Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Please forgive me, cleanse me, and make me your child. Thank you for your mercy and the gift of eternal life. Help me to follow You faithfully from this day forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
