A Devotional Prayer and Hymn of Saving Faith in Christ

The gospel is not merely a message to be admired; it is the truth by which sinners are brought from death to life. To be saved, a person must know and believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, truly God and truly man; that He lived a sinless life; that He died on the cross as the substitute for sinners; that He rose bodily from the grave; and that He is Lord of all. A sinner must also acknowledge the truth about himself: that he is guilty before a holy God, unable to save himself by moral effort, religious works, or personal merit, and entirely dependent upon the grace of God.
The right response to this glorious truth is repentance and faith—turning from sin and self-rule, and trusting in Jesus Christ alone for mercy, forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life.
What follows is a devotional prayer and hymn written to reflect that response in a reverent and heartfelt way. It may serve as an illustration of what believers must know to be true to be saved, and how sinners should respond to the gospel with confession, trust, and surrender to Christ’s Lordship.
A Devotional Prayer of Repentance, Faith, and Surrender
Holy and merciful God,
(I confess that God is holy and I am not) I come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son, with reverence, humility, and need. I confess that You alone are God—holy, righteous, just, and good—and that I have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. I have not loved You as I ought, nor have I walked in willing obedience to Your will. I confess not only the wrong things I have done, but also the sinful heart from which they have come. I have gone astray. I have chosen my own way. I stand guilty before You and cannot justify myself.
(I cannot save myself) Lord, I confess that I cannot save myself. No work of my hands can remove my guilt. No effort, promise, morality, or religion can wash away my sin or make me righteous in Your sight. If I were left to myself, I would remain lost. But I praise You that You have not left sinners without hope. In Your great love and mercy, You sent Jesus Christ into the world.
(I believe in the Person and work of Jesus) I believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, truly God and truly man. I believe that He became flesh, lived in perfect holiness, and fulfilled all righteousness. I believe that He never sinned, yet willingly went to the cross to bear the judgment that sinners deserve. I believe that in His death He offered Himself as the full and sufficient sacrifice for sin. I believe that He died in the place of the guilty, that through His shed blood there is forgiveness, peace with God, and redemption for all who trust in Him.
(I believe in the resurrection, ascension, Lordship, and return of Jesus) I believe that Jesus Christ rose bodily from the dead in victory over sin, death, and the grave. I believe that He is exalted at Your right hand, reigning as Lord, and that He will come again in glory. I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is Lord.
(I repent and plea for God’s mercy) Therefore, Lord, I repent. I turn from my sin, from self-trust, from self-rule, and from every false refuge. I renounce the vain hope that I can save myself. I lay down my pride and bring to You my guilt, uncleanness, and helplessness. Have mercy on me, a sinner.
(I trust in Jesus Christ alone) Lord Jesus Christ, I now place my trust in You alone. I do not come pleading my worthiness, but Your grace. I do not rest in my works, but in Your finished work. I do not claim any righteousness of my own, but receive by faith the righteousness You give. Be my Savior. Wash me clean. Forgive all my sins. Reconcile me to God. Grant me eternal life, not because I deserve it, but because You are gracious and mighty to save.
(I surrender my life to Jesus as my Lord) And Lord Jesus, I surrender myself to You. You are not only Savior, but Lord. Take my life and make it Yours. Rule my heart, govern my desires, renew my mind, and teach me to obey You. Deliver me from the dominion of sin. Make me willing to follow You in joy, in holiness, in faith, and in love. Let my life no longer be my own, but Yours.
(I ask the Spirit to sanctify me) Holy Spirit, work in me true repentance, living faith, and new obedience. Keep me near to Christ. Root me in His Word. Form in me the likeness of Jesus. Strengthen me to turn from sin, to trust Your promises, and to walk as one who has been redeemed by grace alone.
(I thank God for His way of salvation and His enduring love) Thank You, O God, that salvation belongs to You. Thank You that Christ is sufficient. Thank You that whoever comes to Him in true faith will not be cast out. I rest my hope not in what I have done, but in who Jesus is and in all He has accomplished for sinners.
In the holy and precious name of Jesus Christ,
my Savior and my Lord,
Amen.
A Hymn of Saving Grace and Surrender
Trust fully in Jesus Christ to save you, and let your heart rejoice. He has accomplished for you what is essential for your eternal destiny—something you could never achieve alone. In return, be eternally grateful and devoted to Him.
May this Hymn reflect the hope you now have, for you have been adopted into the family of God.
“Nothing in My Hands I Bring, Christ Alone My Hope and King”
Verse 1
O holy God, I bow in shame,
For I have sinned against Your name;
My heart has strayed, my feet have run,
Far from the light of Christ, Your Son.
No righteous deed can cleanse my stain,
No human strength can break sin’s chain;
Undone I fall before Your face,
And plead for mercy, love, and grace.
Verse 2
Yet from Your throne of truth and light,
You sent Your Son in love’s great might;
True God, true Man, He came to save,
To seek the lost, the bound, the slave.
He lived the life I could not live,
And died Himself my peace to give;
Upon the cross my judgment fell,
That I might not be cast to hell.
Verse 3
O precious Lamb of God once slain,
You bore my guilt, my curse, my pain;
Your blood was shed, Your body torn,
That I might unto God be born.
And on the third day You arose,
Triumphant over all Your foes;
Now crowned in glory, Lord divine,
Forever Yours, forever mine.
Verse 4
So now I turn from sin and pride,
From every boast I cast aside;
No more in self will I confide,
But in Your wounds alone I hide.
By grace alone I come to Thee,
By faith alone You welcome me;
Not by my works, but by Your word,
I rest in Christ, my saving Lord.
Verse 5
Lord Jesus, reign within my heart,
And never let me from You part;
My life, my breath, my mind, my days,
I yield to You in prayer and praise.
Teach me to walk the narrow way,
To trust, obey, and watch and pray;
Until I see You face to face,
And sing forever of Your grace.
Doxology / Refrain
All glory be to Christ the Son,
The Holy and Eternal One;
Who died and rose that we might live—
All praise to Him whose grace can save.
Conclusion
These words are not a substitute for Scripture, nor are they meant to suggest that salvation comes through reciting a particular prayer or hymn. Rather, they are intended to express the substance of saving faith: believing the truth about Jesus Christ, acknowledging the truth about our sin and helplessness, and responding with repentance, trust in Christ alone, and joyful surrender to His Lordship.
Where these realities are truly present—however tremblingly expressed—there the grace of God is at work. The sinner who comes to Christ empty-handed, confessing sin and trusting wholly in Him, comes to a willing Savior. Jesus Christ is mighty to save, and all who rest in Him by faith will never be put to shame.
