Dear friends, if there is one universal human experience we would all prefer to avoid, it is suffering. Pain, grief, disappointment, and sickness are unwelcome guests in our lives. When the storm hits, our immediate and natural reaction is to ask God for a way out.
Yet, if we look closely at Scripture and the history of the Church, we discover a profound, albeit difficult, truth: God rarely wastes our pain. While God is not the author of evil, He is the master of redemption. In the Christian life, suffering is often the very soil in which our deepest spiritual growth takes root.
Understanding the Purpose of Suffering
To a watching world, suffering often looks like a meaningless tragedy. But in the kingdom of God, suffering has a refining purpose. The Apostle Paul writes:
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” (Romans 5:3-4, NIV)
Notice that Paul doesn’t say we celebrate for the suffering; we glory in the sufferings because of what they produce. Like gold placed in a furnace, our faith is purified when the heat is turned up. Trials have a unique way of stripping away our self-reliance and worldly attachments, leaving us with nothing but the bedrock of God’s grace.
As the great 19th-century preacher Charles Spurgeon so beautifully confessed:
“I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock of Ages.”
Jesus’ Suffering as Our Model
We do not worship a distant God who is immune to our pain. We worship the “Man of Sorrows.” When we want to understand how to navigate suffering, we must look to Jesus.
Hebrews 4:15 reminds us, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (NIV).
Consider how Jesus modeled suffering for us:
- He was honest about His pain: In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus wept and sweat drops of blood, crying out to His Father to remove the cup of suffering. He didn’t pretend everything was fine.
- He surrendered to the Father’s will: Even in His agony, Jesus prayed, “Yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42, NIV).
- He looked to the joy ahead: Hebrews 12:2 tells us that it was “for the joy set before him he endured the cross.” Jesus knew the suffering was a pathway to resurrection.
How to Grow Through Trials and Challenges
So, how do we actively grow when our hearts are breaking?
First, give yourself permission to grieve. Lament is a deeply biblical practice. More than a third of the Psalms are songs of lament. Bring your raw, unfiltered pain to God. He can handle your questions and your tears.
Second, shift your question from “Why?” to “What?” We may never know the “why” behind our suffering on this side of eternity. But we can ask, “Lord, what are you doing in me through this? What are you trying to teach me about Your character?”
Third, lean into community. Do not isolate yourself. The body of Christ is designed to carry one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Let others hold up your arms when you are too weak to stand.
Encouragement for the Hurting
Perhaps you are reading this today from the middle of a dark valley. Maybe you are facing a terrifying diagnosis, the loss of a loved one, or the shattering of a dream.
Please hear this: You are not forgotten. God is not punishing you.
Psalm 34:18 promises, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (NIV). When you are hurting, God does not pull away from you; He draws near. Your tears are collected in His bottle (Psalm 56:8).
The late pastor Tim Keller offered this profound comfort:
“While other worldviews lead us to sit in the midst of life’s joys, foreseeing the coming sorrows, Christianity empowers its people to sit in the midst of this world’s sorrows, tasting the coming joy.”

An Encouraging Thought
Brothers and sisters, the pain you are enduring today is real, but it is not the end of your story. The cross of Christ guarantees that suffering does not have the final word. Resurrection is coming.
Let the words of the Apostle Paul anchor your soul today: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18, NIV).
Hold on. Keep breathing. Keep trusting. The Master is shaping you into a vessel of extraordinary beauty, and one day, He will wipe every tear from your eyes. You are deeply loved.
