Dear friends, imagine someone hands you a beautifully wrapped gift. You thank them, take it home, and place it on a shelf in your closet. Years go by, and the box gathers dust, unopened.
It sounds absurd, doesn’t it? Yet, this is precisely what many of us do with the spiritual gifts God has graciously given us. We know we have them, but we leave them unwrapped, missing out on the incredible transformation they can bring to our lives and the lives of those around us.
When you gave your life to Christ, you received more than just forgiveness; you were equipped by the Holy Spirit with unique abilities designed to build up the church and bless the world. Today, let’s explore how to unwrap those gifts.
The Beautiful Tapestry of Gifts: 1 Corinthians 12
When we want to understand spiritual gifts, the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is our starting point. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul paints a picture of a diverse but unified body. He writes:
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7, NIV)
Paul is emphasizing two vital truths. First, every believer has a gift. The Holy Spirit distributes them as He determines, meaning you were hand-selected for the specific gifts you possess. Second, our differences are intentional. Just as a human body needs eyes, ears, and hands to function, the church needs teachers, encouragers, administrators, and givers.
As the late pastor and author Tim Keller beautifully stated:
“A spiritual gift is an ability that God gives you to do His work. It is an extension of God’s grace—a way He uses you to minister His grace to others.”
Discovering and Using Your Gifts in Daily Life
Perhaps you are reading this and thinking, “That sounds wonderful, but I have no idea what my spiritual gifts are.” You are not alone! Discovering your gifts isn’t usually a mystical experience; it’s a practical journey of obedience.
Here are three ways to discover and lean into your gifts:
- Pay Attention to Your Holy Passions: What burdens your heart? What brings you deep joy when you do it? Often, God aligns our spiritual gifts with our natural passions.
- Ask for Community Feedback: Other believers often see our gifts before we do. Ask a trusted friend or mentor, “Where do you see God using me most effectively?”
- Just Start Serving: You cannot steer a parked car. If you want to find your gift, volunteer. Try serving in the children’s ministry, joining the prayer team, or helping with church administration. As you serve, the Holy Spirit will confirm where you are most fruitful.
For the Benefit of the Church and Community
It is crucial to remember the end of 1 Corinthians 12:7: gifts are given “for the common good.” Your spiritual gift is not a tool for self-promotion; it is a channel for God’s love to reach others.
The Apostle Peter echoed this when he wrote, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10, NIV).
When a person with the gift of mercy sits with a grieving widow, the church is strengthened. When a person with the gift of giving funds a local food pantry, the community is blessed. The church is only the church when we are actively pouring out what God has poured into us.
A Personal Journey of Discovery
I can speak to this from personal experience. Early in my own walk with the Lord, I believed that the “important” gifts were the ones with a microphone—teaching, preaching, or leading worship. Because I didn’t feel uniquely called to a stage, I felt spiritually inadequate.
However, during a season where our church was going through a difficult transition, I simply started writing short, handwritten notes of encouragement to tired volunteers and staff members. I didn’t think much of it until a leader pulled me aside with tears in his eyes, holding my note, and said, “This is exactly what I needed to keep going today.”
In that quiet moment, I discovered the gift of encouragement (exhortation). I learned that God’s kingdom is heavily reliant on the quiet, behind-the-scenes gifts. When I finally embraced that, it transformed my faith from a spectator sport into an active, joyful partnership with God.

An Encouraging Thought
Brothers and sisters, God did not make a mistake when He created you, and He did not leave you empty-handed when He saved you. You have a vital role to play in God’s great story of redemption. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (NIV).
Do not let your gift remain in the closet. Ask the Lord to reveal it, ask your community to affirm it, and step out in faith to use it. As you do, you will experience the profound joy of seeing God use your ordinary life to bring about extraordinary transformation.
