Spark True Hope: How to Share Faith Without Fear

Posted on June 3, 2026March 3, 2026 By admin
Sharing our faith

Dear friends, for many believers, the word evangelism carries a heavy weight. When we hear the phrase “The Great Commission,” our minds often jump to images of intrepid missionaries trekking through jungles, stadium preachers addressing thousands, or awkward encounters knocking on strangers’ doors.

Because we don’t fit those descriptions, we often disqualify ourselves. We subtly begin to believe that fulfilling God’s overarching mission for the world is a job meant only for the “spiritual professionals.”

But the beauty of the Gospel is that God has chosen to use ordinary people to accomplish His extraordinary purposes. You do not need a theology degree to share the love of Christ. You simply need a willing heart.

The Mandate: Matthew 28:19-20

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gathered His disciples on a mountainside in Galilee and gave them their final, marching orders. This wasn’t a suggestion; it was a mandate that echoes through the centuries to us today:

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'” (Matthew 28:18-20, NIV)

Notice the foundation of this command. Jesus begins by declaring His absolute authority. We do not go out in our own strength or on our own merit. We are ambassadors of the King of Kings, backed by the authority of heaven itself.

Understanding the Call to Make Disciples

It is vital to understand that Jesus did not say, “Go and make converts.” He said, “Go and make disciples.”

A convert is someone who simply makes a decision; a disciple is a lifelong learner and follower of Jesus. Making disciples is not a transactional sales pitch; it is a deeply relational journey. It means walking alongside someone, answering their messy questions, modeling what repentance looks like, and loving them unconditionally.

The great 19th-century pastor Charles Spurgeon put it with characteristic bluntness:

“Every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor. You either try to save the lost, or you yourself are lost.”

While that quote may sting, it reveals a profound truth: a heart that has been truly transformed by the grace of Jesus cannot help but overflow into the lives of others.

Empowering Stories of the Commission in Action

The Great Commission is rarely fulfilled under bright stadium lights. It usually happens in the quiet, ordinary rhythms of life.

Consider the story of David, a mechanic in our broader church family. David doesn’t consider himself a preacher, but he views his auto shop as his mission field. Over the years, he has made it a point to hire young men from troubled backgrounds as apprentices. He teaches them how to fix transmissions, but more importantly, he eats lunch with them, listens to their struggles, and talks openly about how Jesus rescued his own life.

Over the past decade, David has had the privilege of leading four of those young men to Christ and standing beside them in the baptismal waters. He didn’t cross an ocean to fulfill the Great Commission; he just opened his garage doors.

Practical Ways to Share Faith in Everyday Life

How can we seamlessly integrate this mission into our daily routines?

  1. Pray for Open Doors: The Apostle Paul asked the early church to “pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message” (Colossians 4:3, NIV). Start your morning by asking God to highlight one person who needs His love that day.
  2. Share Your Story (Not Just Your Theology): People can argue with theology, but they cannot argue with your personal testimony. Be prepared to share how Jesus has specifically brought you peace, healing, or purpose. Keep it authentic, brief, and focused on His grace.
  3. Practice the Ministry of Presence: In an incredibly lonely world, simply being a consistent, loving presence speaks volumes. Show up for people in their grief. Celebrate their victories. When they ask why you care so much, point them to Jesus.

Going Deeper: Recommended Reading

If you want to grow more confident in sharing your faith naturally and authentically, these books are phenomenal resources:

  • The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert E. Coleman – A foundational, classic book that examines exactly how Jesus discipled the twelve, showing us a highly relational, life-on-life model.
  • Evangelism in a Skeptical World by Sam Chan – A highly relevant, modern guide on how to share the Gospel with people who are resistant to faith, using storytelling and hospitality.
  • Sharing Jesus Without Freaking Out by Alvin L. Reid – A short, deeply encouraging book that relieves the pressure of evangelism and teaches you how to have normal, natural conversations about faith.

An Encouraging Thought

Brothers and sisters, the Great Commission can feel like an overwhelming task. But look closely at the very last sentence Jesus speaks in the Gospel of Matthew: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

He did not give you an impossible mission and leave you to figure it out alone. The very Spirit of God dwells inside you. He goes before you in every conversation, He softens the hearts of the people you speak to, and He gives you the words to say. Take a deep breath, look at the people God has placed in your neighborhood, your workplace, and your family, and step out in faith. The harvest is plentiful, and the Lord of the harvest is walking right beside you.
