The Heart of Obedience: The Parable of the Two Sons

In His teachings, Jesus often used parables to illuminate deep truths about human nature and our relationship with God. The Parable of the Two Sons, found in Matthew 21:28-32, challenges us to examine the sincerity of our obedience and the authenticity of our relationship with God.

The Parable of the Two Sons

“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

“‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

“Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

“Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

A Father’s Request

The parable begins with a father who has two sons. He approaches the first son and asks him to go work in the vineyard. The son initially refuses, saying, “I will not,” but later changes his mind and goes. The father then goes to the second son with the same request. This son agrees to go, saying, “I will, sir,” but ultimately does not follow through.

These contrasting responses serve as a mirror for our own lives, inviting us to reflect on how we respond to God’s call. The first son’s actions illustrate a change of heart, moving from rebellion to obedience. The second son, however, shows an outward agreement that lacks inward sincerity—his words do not translate into faithful action.
