Dear friends, if you listen closely to the subtle messages of our culture, you will hear a consistent and anxiety-inducing theme: There is never enough. We are constantly told to accumulate more, build bigger barns, and tightly grip whatever we have managed to acquire.
But the Kingdom of God operates on an entirely different economic system. In God’s economy, we don’t gain by hoarding; we gain by giving away. We find true security not in the size of our bank accounts, but in the faithfulness of our Provider.
The journey from a mindset of scarcity to a lifestyle of joyful generosity is one of the most liberating transformations a Christian can experience.
Generosity as a Reflection of God’s Character
To understand biblical generosity, we must first look at the heart of God. Our God is, by His very nature, an outrageously generous giver. He didn’t just give us life; He gave us His own Son. As the famous verse reminds us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” (John 3:16, NIV).
Notice the inseparable link between love and giving. You can give without loving, but you absolutely cannot love without giving. When we choose to be generous with our time, our forgiveness, and our finances, we are reflecting the family likeness. We never look more like our Heavenly Father than when we are giving freely to others.
The great Christian thinker C.S. Lweis offered a brilliantly challenging benchmark for this:
“I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, indulgences, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little.”
Biblical Principles of Stewardship
The foundational principle of biblical generosity is a concept called stewardship. A steward is someone who manages property that belongs to someone else.
Psalm 24:1 (NIV) declares, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” When we truly grasp that we are not owners, but merely managers of God’s resources, it completely changes our relationship with money.
God entrusts us with wealth not simply to raise our standard of living, but to raise our standard of giving. He invites us to partner with Him in blessing the world. And He loves the attitude of a heart that gives freely: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7, NIV).
A Story of Radical Generosity: “God Has a Bigger Shovel”
When we look for modern examples of this kind of open-handed stewardship, few stories are as inspiring as that of R.G. LeTourneau (1888–1969). LeTourneau was a highly successful Christian industrialist who designed and built massive earth-moving machinery.
Early in his career, LeTourneau struggled with debt and business failures. However, he made a radical commitment to God: he would treat God not just as a priority, but as his senior business partner. As his company grew to become wildly successful, LeTourneau did something unthinkable in the corporate world. Instead of tithing the standard 10%, he and his wife Evelyn eventually reversed it—living on just 10% of their income and giving 90% away to fund global missions, educational institutions, and ministries.
When asked how he could possibly give away so much wealth and still remain financially prosperous, LeTourneau famously replied:
“I shovel out the money, and God shovels it back—but God has a bigger shovel.” (Source: “Mover of Men and Mountains,” the autobiography of R.G. LeTourneau)
LeTourneau understood that he was merely a conduit for God’s blessings. His life proves the truth of Proverbs 11:25 (NIV): “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
Practical Steps for Becoming More Generous
Generosity rarely happens by accident. It requires intentionality. How can we cultivate a generous heart in our everyday lives?
- Give the First Fruits: Don’t give God the leftovers at the end of the month. Make giving the very first line item in your budget. When you prioritize giving, you are tangibly declaring that God is first in your life.
- Start Where You Are: You don’t have to be wealthy to be generous. If you cannot be generous with ten dollars, you will not be generous with ten thousand dollars. Start small, but be utterly consistent.
- Broaden Your Definition of Generosity: Remember that God has given you more than just money. You can be generous with your time by mentoring a younger believer. You can be generous with your words by offering sincere encouragement. You can be generous with your home through hospitality.

An Encouraging Thought
Brothers and sisters, money is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. When we grip our resources tightly, our hands are closed—we cannot give, but we also cannot receive what God wants to hand us.
I encourage you today to loosen your grip. Ask the Lord, “Whose life can I bless this week with what You have entrusted to me?” As you step out in faith and practice generosity, you will discover that you cannot out-give God. He is infinitely faithful, and the joy of participating in His generosity is vastly superior to the fleeting comfort of keeping it all for yourself.
